Mother’s Day has long been celebrated as a day to honour one’s mother. It is important for each of us to take the time to celebrate and thank our mothers for all that they are and for all that they do. But did you know that originally, way back in 1870, Mother’s Day was envisioned as a time for women to come together and unite for peace?
That being said, I recently found an article written by Lisa Williams, which I think is an appropriate prelude to my Mother’s Day endeavour. I would like to share an excerpt with you:
Know Your Worth!!!
Somewhere along the line many of us as women are led to believe that being pretty is enough. And while we rely on that, we forget to strengthen our minds so that we can learn how to think, how to build. How to survive. We forget how to live our lives to protect our spirit, to be clean and decent. We forget that everything we do matters so much. Every right decision brings us blessings. Every wrong decision brings us pain. And then, when times get hard, our struggle and our pain show on our faces and our bodies. When people see our pain and weakness in our face they say, ‘She used to be fine, she used to be this, she used to be that’…When you look in the mirror don’t see death, see life. Don’t see ugly, see beauty. You are powerful!….If you could work on who you are, what you stand for, what you believe, then you can make better decisions. What do you live for? What makes life for you worth living? What is so important to you that you would risk your life for it? Fight for it, die for it? I cannot tell you what to believe in, but I can tell you that if you don’t know, everything in your life will be confused. Knowing what you believe lays a foundation for your life. Then you can have principles and ideas that you follow, things that you are unwilling to compromise. If you’re deciding what you believe every day, and every day you believe something else, you will have nothing to look forward to but chaos…..You are a woman! – RESPECT yourself, walk proudly with your head up high knowing that you are more than just an ass, a pretty face, a man’s sexual desire. You…your mind, spirit and soul…are BEAUTIFUL!
My sisters, you have a heroic story. As God’s women, you are the most oppressed people in our society; yet, through all the oppression, mistreatment and exploitation, you have shouldered your responsibilities and remained strong like true Queens. While you are mothers, you are also warriors; while you are wives and girlfriends, you are also leaders.
